## What will I learn?

 * Imam ʿAsim and his narrator Shuʿbah (Abu Bakr Shuʿbah ibn ʿAyyash, d. 193 AH)
 * Words where Shuʿbah differs from Hafs, such as «هُزُؤًا» and «كُفُؤًا» with hamzah
 * «ءَأَن كَانَ ذَا مَالٍ» with two hamzahs in Surat al-Qalam
 * A kasrah on the hāʾ of «أَنسَانِيهِ» and «عَلَيْهِ ٱللَّهَ»
 * A full khatmah in the riwayah for those who want an ijazah

## Why Shuʿbah after Hafs?

Hafs and Shuʿbah both narrate the reading of ʿAsim ibn Abi an-Najud of Kufa, so
their rules are very close and most differences are specific words. Once you master
Hafs, you can read Shuʿbah after learning and checking those words with the sheikh.

## Examples where Shuʿbah differs from Hafs

 Examples of Hafs and Shuʿbah differences | Place | Hafs | Shuʿbah |
   | huzuwan, kufuwan | With wāw | With hamzah: huzuʾan, kufuʾan |
 | riḍwān | With kasrah on the rāʾ | With ḍammah on the rāʾ in all places but one in al-Māʾidah |
 | The four saktāt | Brief pause in their places, e.g. ʿiwajā… qayyiman | No pause |

These are examples only. The teacher goes through every place in order during the
khatmah.

## What happens in a class?

You recite from the Mushaf in Shuʿbah, and the teacher goes over the words where
Shuʿbah differs from Hafs in that passage, before and after you read.

Every week you get a short written report: what was covered, recurring mistakes,
and next week’s goal.
