What is the Noorani Qaida?

The Noorani Qaida is a beginner’s reading book written by Sheikh Noor Muhammad Haqqani of Ludhiana, India (d. 1925). Its lessons build step by step: single letters, joined letters, vowels, tanween, madd letters, sukoon, shaddah, and finally the main Tajweed rules. Most of its words come from the Quran, so students practise real Quranic words from the start and learn Tajweed while they learn to read.

Is it different from Noor al-Bayan or the Baghdadi Qaida?

All three teach reading from zero. The Baghdadi Qaida uses spelling out (“alif fatha a”), and Noor al-Bayan uses many drills and suits nursery-age children. We use the Noorani Qaida because it reaches correct Quran reading with Tajweed fastest. A full comparison is in our Arabic article.

When is a student ready to move on to the Mushaf?

  • They can read a page they have never seen without spelling out the letters.
  • They keep close letters apart, such as ḥāʾ and hāʾ, or sīn and ṣād.
  • They hold a natural madd for two counts and keep short vowels short.
  • They read sukoon and shaddah correctly.

What are the most common beginner mistakes?

Common Noorani Qaida mistakes and how they are fixed
Mistake Example Fix
ḥāʾ read as hāʾ al-ḥamdu read as “al-hamdu” Bring ḥāʾ from the middle of the throat with a slight rasp
Stretching a short vowel ba read as “baa” A short vowel is one count; madd is two
Dropping the shaddah rabbi read as “rabi” Press on the doubled letter as if it were two letters
Thin heavy letters qāla read as “kāla” Make qāf heavy from the back of the tongue
ḍād read as dāl aḍ-ḍāllīn read as “ad-dāllīn” Bring ḍād from the side of the tongue against the molars

What happens in a class?

Each class starts with a short revision of the last lesson, then one new Qaida lesson, then reading practice aloud while the teacher corrects every letter. It ends with a short exercise to practise before the next class.

Every week you get a short written report: what was covered, recurring mistakes, and next week’s goal.

Frequently asked questions

Can I start if I don't know any Arabic?

Yes. The course starts from the first letter, and the teacher explains in English.

What age can a child start?

Most children start at 5. The teacher checks readiness in the free trial class.

How long does the Noorani Qaida take?

Usually 3 to 6 months with two classes a week, depending on age and practice at home.

Is the Noorani Qaida only for children?

No. Many adult converts and adults who never learned to read Arabic take it, with 60-minute classes.

How many classes a week are enough?

At least two. For young children, three short classes work better than one long one, because repetition fixes the letters.

Do I need a printed copy of the book?

No. The teacher shares the page on screen and sends a digital copy. A printed copy helps with practice at home.
