What is an ijazah and a sanad?
An ijazah is written permission from a qualified sheikh that you recited the whole Quran to them with mastery. The sanad is the chain of teachers from your sheikh back to the Prophet ﷺ, each of whom recited to the one before. You can ask to see your sheikh’s sanad in the free trial class before you begin.
From memory or from the Mushaf: what is the difference?

|---|---|---|

| Memorizing the Quran | Required | Not required |
| Sanad | Connected to the Prophet ﷺ | Connected to the Prophet ﷺ |

Frequently asked questions
Is an online ijazah valid?
An ijazah rests on the student reciting to a qualified sheikh and the sheikh hearing them. The medium does not change that; what matters is the sheikh's sanad and the student's mastery.
Can I see the sheikh's sanad before I start?
Yes. Ask to see the sheikh's ijazah and sanad in the free trial class before you begin.
Is the ijazah from memory or from the Mushaf?
Both exist. An ijazah from memory requires the whole Quran memorized; an ijazah from the Mushaf (nazran) is for strong readers who have not memorized it all.
What does “via ash-Shāṭibiyyah” mean?
It is the route taken from Imam ash-Shāṭibī's poem Ḥirz al-Amānī, which most printed Hafs Mushafs follow.
What is written in the ijazah?
The student's name, the riwayah and route, the type of ijazah (from memory or from the Mushaf), and the chain of the sanad to the Prophet ﷺ.
