What will I learn?
- Imam Nafiʿ and his narrator Qalun (ʿIsa ibn Mina of Madinah, d. 220 AH)
- Separated madd short or medium
- Joining the plural mīm (ṣilah), with two ways from Qalun, as in «عَلَيْهِمُو»
- A sākin hāʾ in «هو» and «هي» after wāw, fāʾ and lām, as in «وَهْوَ»
- Words where Qalun differs from Hafs, such as «مَلِكِ يَوْمِ الدِّينِ»
Qalun or Warsh first?
Both narrate Nafiʿ, but Qalun is closer to Hafs in most rules: no naql, no long badal, and none of Warsh’s light rāʾ and heavy lām. Many students learn Qalun before Warsh for that reason.
Key rules of Qalun
| Rule | Example |
|---|---|
| Separated madd short or medium | bimā unzila |
| Connected madd medium | jāʾa |
| Ṣilah of the plural mīm, with a difference of opinion | ʿalayhimū |
| Sukoon on the hāʾ of huwa/hiya after wāw, fāʾ and lām | wa-hwa, fa-hya |
| Easing the second of two hamzahs in a word, with idkhāl | a-ā-ndhartahum |
